Abstract Painting

This painting began as background of earth tones and red hues. Without any sketch to guide the imagery I began working wet oil paint onto the surface, moving around the brush until forms began to emerge, slowly taking shape. Once the forms where loosely shaped out I allowed the canvas to dry. I then proceeded to scrub and sand away areas, revealing the underlying white gesso, allowing it to subtly peak through. Over the next month I applied paint with a very fine brush in cross hatch brushstrokes. This addition created an effect that from a few feet away gives the viewer the sensation that the shapes are vibrating off the canvas. By combining the fetish like brushwork with the voulminous tribal shapes intertwined with the pulsating play of the color scheme, the sensation of a three dimensional image on a flat surface was formed.
